What is Above The Fold?

Overview

Above the fold remains an important part of website design, although the notion has become more and more complex with each passing year.

For web pages, the area that appears before the page is scrolled. The term is derived from the place where it appears on the front page of the newspaper when it is folded in half. The most important thing is placed on top of the fold.

Above the fold is the upper half of the front page of a newspaper or tabloid, often containing an important news story or picture. Just like papers are often displayed to readers on the folded side; only the top half of the front page is visible. Thus, an item that may be "above the fold" that editors think will entice people to buy the paper. Alternatively, it reflects a decision on the part of the editors that the article is one of the most important of the day. By extension, the space above the fold is also preferred by advertisers, as it is most prominent and visible even when the newspaper is on the stand.
