What is Human-Computer Interaction (HCI)?

Overview

Human-computer interaction or HCI refers to an area of study that focuses on the design of computer systems. HCI is the study of how people interact with computers and the extent to which computers have evolved for successful interactions with humans.

With the popularization of personal computing, HCI emerged in the 1980s. HCI is sometimes also termed HMI (human-machine interaction), MMI (man-machine interaction), or CHI (computer-human interaction). HCI researchers observe the ways humans interact with computers and design technologies that allow humans to interact with computers in new ways.

A device that allows interaction between a human and a computer is known as a human-computer interface. The main advantages of HCI are simplicity, ease of deployment and operation, and cost savings for small setups.
