What is Proximity Principle?

Overview

The Gestalt theory of grouping states that objects that are grouped together are considered related together.

Proximity theory states that people tend to treat objects together as a group. The theory suggests that people who are close to each other in the physical environment are more likely to form relationships than those who are farther away.

The advantage of proximity is also reflected in creating meaningful groupings when presenting basic text content; sentences are grouped together in paragraphs separated by whitespace at the top and bottom.

In addition, whitespace around well-designed headings indicate which paragraph they belong to - text from the relevant section is usually placed closer to the title than the text from the previous section.
