What is Z Pattern?

Overview

Z-Layout is a great way to start any web design project because it addresses the core requirements for any effective site: branding, hierarchy, structure, and calls to action. In the design system, the Z-pattern suggests that the viewer will pass through two fallow areas.

The Z-pattern is sometimes called a reverse-S-pattern, which may indicate a more curved path as opposed to a sharper-angled path. Otherwise, they are basically the same thing. The main difference with the Gutenberg diagram is that the Z-pattern suggests that the viewer will pass through two fallow areas.

A Z-pattern design traces the path the human eye travels when they read - left to right, top to bottom: First, people scan from top left to top right, forming an imaginary horizontal line Draw an imaginary diagonal line across the front, bottom, and left of the visible page Finally, move to the right again, creating a second horizontal line. When the viewer's eye moves in this pattern, it creates an imaginary "Z" shape.
