What is Mental Model?

Overview

A mental model is a representation of what the user believes about a product's functionality. The more the user's mental model aligns with the functionality of the product, the easier it is for them to use it.

The mental model refers to how the user thinks about his environment and interacts with that environment. Mental models are based on the user's past experience and help sharpen their understanding and way of completing tasks.

Mental models help you understand life processes. As such, supply and demand is a mental model that helps you understand how the economy works. There is a hypothesis that it plays a major role in decision-making and how they approach a problem.

For example, to navigate further down a page, some users have a mental model of "swiping up" on the screen, while other users are accustomed to "scrolling down".
