Thumbnails are smaller-sized versions of pictures or videos that are used to help identify and organize them, playing the same role for images that a normal text index does for words. The image format for the thumbnail can be JPEG, PNG, GIF, or WEBP. JPEG is most commonly used because it is smaller in file size than other image formats; However, the exact pixel dimensions may vary.
