What is Segments?

Overview

Network segmentation is a network security technique that divides a network into smaller, distinct sub-networks that enable network teams to segment sub-networks and assign unique security controls and services to each sub-network.

A network segment is a part of a computer network. The nature and extent of a segment depend on the nature of the network and the equipment or devices used to interconnect the end stations.

Segmentation allows organizations to divide their networks into manageable parts and reduce the amount of data sensitive to threats at a given time. Network segmentation is also important because it allows organizations to meet federal compliance standards that enforce the protection of sensitive data such as personally identifiable information.
