What is Image Map?

Overview

An image map is a graphic image in Web page development so that a user can click on different areas of the image that are linked to different destinations. The map tag can consist of more than one area element which defines the coordinates and type of the area.

An image map is a list of coordinates in HTML and XHTML; related to a specific image, created in order to hyperlink areas of the image to different destinations. For example, a map of the world may have each country hyperlinked to further information about a country.

HTML image maps are used to make clickable areas on images, where you can click on the image and it will open to a specified location. The map tag can include many elements (area) that define the coordinates and type of the area. You can simply link any area of a picture to other pages using the tag without dividing the image. These clickable areas can be used to navigate to the various link to other web pages or the specific section of the same web page.
