What is Gestalt Principles?

Overview

Gestalt principles define and explain how the human mind perceives various systematic elements. Gestalt theory is a set of theories developed by the Gestalt psychology movement, which govern how humans view order in a complex field of objects. The Gestalt theory of visual organization states that objects that are near each other, with a similar background, are related to each other, or are similarly related to a group.

Gestalt principles are theories/laws of human perception that describe how humans group similar elements, recognize patterns and simplify complex images when we see objects. Designers use principles to organize content on websites and other interfaces so that it is aesthetically pleasing and easy to understand.

Gestalt principles can help you understand how the end user will interpret and navigate your work. There are five types of Gestalt principles:

  • Proximity
  • Similarity
  • Continuity
  • Closure
  • Connectedness
