What is Taxonomy?

Overview

A content model or taxonomy is the practice of classifying things and concepts and shows the relationships between different types of content.

Taxonomy is related to user experience and information architecture refers to the structural methods of how information is sorted, classified, and organized.

A taxonomy is a separate hierarchical metadata structure that governs the specific concepts used to describe the content within the IA structure. For example, how a website is divided into categories and sub-categories so that they are simple, easy to use, and learnable.

The purpose of a taxonomy is to understand a set of subject-specific concepts, and creates a vocabulary for those concepts; to ultimately organize the material things and make them easier to find or interact with.
