What is Context Effect?

Overview

The effect and mental influence of surrounding elements on the perceived meaning or use of an isolated element; the meaning of a personal connection or individual link.

A context effect is an aspect of cognitive psychology that describes the effect of environmental factors on the perception of a stimulus. The effect of reference effects is considered part of the top-down design. The concept is supported by a theoretical approach known as constructive perception. Contextual effects can affect our daily lives in many ways such as word recognition, learning ability, memory, and object recognition.

This can have a huge impact on marketing and consumer decisions. For example, research has shown that the floor on which buyers stand when reviewing products can affect their assessment of product quality. The floors are rated high when comfortable and low when uncomfortable. Because of such effects, context effects are currently studied in marketing.
