What is Data Collection?

Overview

Any technology used to collect data from actual or potential end-users of a product. Data collection techniques can be direct or indirect and can be operated with a group of end-users or a single end-users.

Data collection is the process of collecting and measuring information on target variables in an established system, which then enables relevant questions to be answered and results evaluated. Data collection is a research component in all study areas including the physical and social sciences, business, and humanities.

For any data collection, methods may vary by discipline, but the emphasis remains the same on ensuring accurate and honest collection. The goal of all data collection is to obtain quality evidence that allows the analysis to yield concrete and reliable answers to the questions asked. Data collection and verification consists of four phases when it involves carrying out a census and seven phases involving sampling.
