What is Needfinding?

Overview

Needfinding is the research process for identifying a user's need for a product or solution. The process of need-finding is based on observation and study of people. It involves a mix of techniques that includes interviews conducted by researchers as well as close-up observations in real-world scenarios.

Needfinding is the process of research and discovery prior to product development. Before adding the first task to a product roadmap, a development team needs to understand why they are developing the product. Product development justification can come from a variety of sources: focus groups, interviews, customer advisory boards, surveys, and others.

Needfinding also involves visiting customers and seeing how they conduct their daily routines. So this is where a conceivable product team has a strong chance of discovering an unmet need.
