What is Natural Language Processing (NLP)?

Overview

NLP or Natural Language Processing is the ability of a computer program to interpret human speech as spoken. They do this by processing and analyzing large amounts of language data. It is a subfield of linguistics, computer science, and artificial intelligence and has various real-world applications in many fields, including medical research, search engines, and business intelligence.

NLP enables computers to understand natural languages like humans. Whether language is spoken or written, natural language processing uses artificial intelligence to take real-world input, process it, and provide a sensible output as a computer understand it.

Just as humans have different sensors (like ears for hearing and eyes for seeing); computers have programs to read and microphones to collect audio. And as we humans have brains to process that input, computers have programs to process their respective inputs. In computer processing, the input is turned into code that the computer can understand.
