What is Material Design?

Overview

Material Design also called Material, is a design language developed by Google and used in Android devices.

Material Design is a design language for android developed by Google in 2014. The purpose of the design language is the creation of a new visual language that combines the principles of good design with technological and scientific innovation.

According to designer Matías Duarte, unlike real paper, digital content can intelligently expand and improve. 'Material' consists of physical surfaces and edges. Google says that Material Design is based on paper and ink but the implementation happens in an advanced way.

Material design designers apply basic and natural laws from the physical world. The idea is that by mimicking the physical world, they minimize users' cognitive load, maximize predictability, and eliminate ambiguity by paying careful attention to layout, visual language, and pattern libraries.
