What is Qualitative User Research?

Overview

The qualitative research method is used to collect information about users over time. In this practice, participants are asked to write their everyday lives in a journal over a defined period.

User research is an important part of any UX process and can be either qualitative or quantitative. A qualitative user research method is asking users to record their experiences and thoughts about a product or task in a journal over a set of time. Qualitative user research focuses on personal perceptions of the world and the experiences in it.

Qualitative user research provides insight into the users’ thoughts, motivations, and behaviors. It’s a process of collecting and analyzing objective, numerical data from various types of user testing. Quantitative user research utilizes large numbers to produce bias-free measurable data about a specific audience.
