Overview

A Norman door is a wrongly or poorly designed door (UX design) that confuses or fails to give you an idea of whether to push or pull. It was named after Don Norman, author of The Design of Everyday Things, who discovered the phenomenon.

To determine if a door is ‘Norman’; simply ask yourself if the door makes sense when you approach. Give it a pass or fail grade. An advocate of user-centered (people-oriented) design, Norman offers insights that bring together aspects of usability, engineering, and cognitive science.

Elements of the design give false indications of usability and therefore the solution to this issue is to put signs to show users what to do next. Without signs users are left wondering what to do with the door, either pushing or pulling - leading to huge frustration.
