What is Auto Complete?

Overview

Auto Complete or auto-suggestion, is a process by which a drop-down list, combo box, or text entry field is filled when the user has typed enough characters for a complete match.

The HTML autocomplete attribute lets web developers specify whether a user agent has any permissions to provide automatic assistance with filling out form field values and guide the browser about the typing information expected in the field. Autocomplete, or word completion, is a feature in which an application predicts the rest of the word a user is typing. In smartphones or mobile devices, this is called predictive text. In GUI or graphical user interfaces, users can simply press the ‘Tab’ key to accept a suggestion or the Down arrow key to accept one of several.
