Exploratory testing is an approach to software testing that can be described as simultaneous learning, test design, and test execution. Coined by Cem Kaner in 1984, exploratory testing can be described as a style of software testing that emphasizes the personal freedom and responsibility of the individual tester to continually optimize the quality of his work by treating test-related learning, test design, and test execution. Exploratory testing is always performed by skilled testers.

It focuses on the discovery and relies on the guidance of the individual tester to uncover defects that are not easily covered by the scope of other tests. The practice of exploratory testing has gained momentum in recent years. Testers and quality assurance managers are encouraged to include exploratory testing as part of a comprehensive test coverage strategy.
