What is User Research?

Overview

User research is an important part of UX design. Depending on the projects’ needs, and constraints, one can choose from a variety of research methods, from surveys and tests to interviews and usability testing.

User research, or design research, encompasses a wide range of methods. This can mean anything from conducting ethnographic interviews with the target group to classical usability studies, to quantitative measurements of the return on investment (ROI) on your user experience design.

User research is used to inspire your design, evaluate your solutions, and measure your impact. User research (and other types of research) is often divided into quantitative and qualitative methods. Surveys and formal experiments such as A/B testing and tree testing are examples of quantitative research tools while interviews and (to a lesser extent) usability testing are examples of qualitative research tools.
