What is Chromostereopsis?

Overview

Chromostereopsis is a visual illusion that occurs when certain colors are placed side by side, making it difficult to focus on both colors, because the respective wavelengths stimulate different areas within the eye.

Chromostereopsis is most likely to occur when blue and red or green and red are put together. Designers can avoid this by using varying saturation and contrast, or by placing achromatic borders around each color. Chromostereopsis is usually visualized using a target with red and blue stripes and an achromatic background. Positive Chromostereopsis is displayed when red bars are perceived in front of blue and negative Chromostereopsis is displayed when red bars are perceived behind blue.
