What is Luminance?

Overview

Luminance is the measurement of light intensity. The subjective experience is brightness. A computer display generally emits between 50 to 300 cd/m2. Sunlight at noon is about 1.6×109 cd/m2.

Luminance levels indicate how much luminous power can be detected by the human eye when a particular surface is viewed from a particular angle. Thus luminance is an indicator of how bright a surface will appear. For an ideal optical system, the luminance at the output is the same as the luminance at the input.

Screen luminance commonly referred to as screen brightness is an objective measure of how much light is reflected from the screen to the audience. The SI unit for luminance is candela per square meter (cd/m2) and the US customary unit for luminance is foot-lambert.
