The term comes from the word "wiki wiki", which means ‘quick or fast’ in the Hawaiian language. A wiki is a server program that allows users to collaborate in creating the content of a Web site.

A wiki is a collaborative online tool or website where users can edit, add or delete content. Wikis are the most popular way to read, write and share information online. Its simple formatting syntax allows its users to create content on the web without the need to learn the complexities of HTML.

A wiki is a website, database, or online community managed by its users. Not all wikis are like Wikipedia. Most are more specific. Good alternative wiki examples are fans of the fictional universes of Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and Star Wars. Each fandom contains encyclopedic information about the characters, settings, and story.
