What is Causation?

Overview

A relationship between the first event (the cause) and a second event (the effect), where the second event is a consequence/result of the first event.

Causality is the area of statistics that is commonly misunderstood or misused by people in that the data shows a correlation that there is essentially an underlying causal relationship. The cause indicates that one event is the result of the occurrence of another event; i.e. there is a causal relationship between two events; Cause and Effect. Theoretically, it is easy to distinguish the difference between the two types of relationship - one action or event may be the cause of another (smoking increases the risk of developing lung cancer), or it may correlate with another. (Smoking is related to alcohol, but it does not cause alcoholism).
