What is Law of Proximity?

Overview

The law of proximity states that ‘objects that are closer or proximate to each other tend to be grouped together. Proximity helps to establish relationships with nearby objects and also helps users understand and organize information faster and more efficiently.

The law of proximity describes how the human eye perceives the relationships between visual elements. Elements that are closer to each other are said to be related to elements that are further away from each other.

The law of proximity allows us to use whitespace, for example, to create perceived relationships between different elements. The law enables us to understand the text as a whole. It’s also true for paragraph spacing and disparate elements of text on a web page. The distance between sections of text tells us how likely they are to be related to each other.
